Aquamarine’s history and lore is deeply tied to the ocean waters that its color is said to resemble. This gemstone gets its name from the Latin terms for “water” and “of the sea”. Aquamarine is so closely connected to water because of its light blue to greenish hue and its transparent quality. This stone may appear fragile and dainty, but it rates a 7.5 - 8.0 out of 10.0 on the Moh’s Scale of Mineral Hardness. It is durable and tough enough to be a perfect addition to most jewelry.
Aquamarine is a member of the beryl mineral family along with emeralds. However, aquamarine tends to be more readily available and less expensive compared to emeralds.
Aquamarine’s durability, pricepoint, availability, and beautiful color make it a perfect birthstone and a wonderful gemstone to add to any piece of fine jewelry.
